Makaha is (west/leeward side) is fine. Anywhere on the north shore is also good choice.
Depends what your agendas like and what your expecting. Makaha is very busy as far as traffic in the mornings and in the afternoons. There isn’t anything to do on that side of the island and the people on that side are very, how do you say anti tourist. North shore maybe a little farther, but beautiful a day long and worth the trip. There are multiple things to do on this side( where I’m from), and the people on this side are more friendly and open to tourist. North shore has all the beautiful sunsets and beaches as well. anyways good luck and enjoy your trip.
Just so you know Waikiki is a part of Honolulu. And there are some Bed and Breakfast places on the North Shore. then there is Turtle Bay: and the Kahala:
Anywhere on the South Shore is good:
East would be my second choice:
